Highsnobiety
Print redesign and design direction, 2025-ongoing.
Redesigned in conversation with EIC Noah Johnson in summer 2025 to realign the HS print magazine under his new editorial strategy of "radical legibility" and candid photography. We regrounded Highsnobiety's print design structures with their larger brand language by taking their Univers-based identity (originally developed by Mirko Borsche) and introducing a sophisticated serif in Terza by Commercial Type, and throwing them in a blender with inspiration from archival international menswear magazines.
Prior to my arrival the Highsnobiety logo was chopped down from a full mark into an H with an underline, which inspired a language of embedded glyphics and linear constructions, from long quotations to vertical image trims marking template borders, to bold lines breaking paragraphs, to much more. The cover is a nod to obi-strips which were originally used to recontextualize imported covers into japanese consumer contexts. Here, we used it to inform the basis of 'radical legibility.'
The redesign was mentioned in the New York Times, which was nice.
Designed with legends Melanie Leung and Youri Chappelle.
